CONSTRUCTION DEVELOPMENT

Once Habitat has acquired property, groundbreaking begins. The Building Supervisor coordinates all construction needs such as permits, materials, excavation, etc. The Volunteer Coordinator contacts volunteers to help with the construction of the house. The affiliate averages 20 volunteers on an active list at all times. A “construction hot line” is activated during construction. Anyone interested in volunteering can call the “hotline” and get updated construction information.

The Greater Wenatchee Habitat for Humanity had “special builds” in 1999, 2000, and 2001. In 1999, the First United Methodist Church built a “Blitz” house. This is a type of construction where an entire church congregation builds a Habitat house in one week. In the summer of 2000, seven local churches built a “Nehemiah” house in approximately six weeks. Each church was responsible for one phase of construction of the Habitat house. For example, one church was responsible for the framing of the home and another church, the roofing. Many churches funded their phase as well. In 2001, the First United Methodist Church and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church combined their efforts to build another Blitz home; and five Lutheran churches came together and built a “Nehemiah” house.
